Platform: Disc PC/MACEdition: Home & Business + StateVerified Purchase
My CD arrived today, but haven’t had the chance to install yet. Had to open it as the disc was rattling around loose inside the holder, but looks like the disc wasn’t scratched – bullet dodged. Plus no longer a worry in the era of Activation Codes (see below).

So far as the program itself goes, the main reason I keep coming back is the ability to port in most of the previous year’s data. Comes in VERY handy when certain calculations spread across multiple years. Major gripe is that a lot of the business-related worksheets (Schedule C, for instance) do NOT print out when one selects the option to “print all”. However, if one knows which sheets don’t print, one can still manually search/print the data to hardcopy or PDF. The other gripe is that from year-to-year the ability to pass some/all of one’s State refund to the following year moves about. It’s a simple matter to simply “override” the amount from the worksheet view, but it would be great if they made the ability to access State refunds as simple as it is to access Federal.

This year am a little Extra Nervous as have seen a LOT of reviews/comments regarding the inability to activate the software, or that activated software becomes inactive, or that Error 606 rears it’s head after a few weeks, etc. From reading on the Intuit forums, the problems seem to be all over the place, and the only posted response is “go read this article” or “contact us on twitter”. One would think if there was a known workaround, it would be a simple matter to simply post the information and be done with it. The only potential workaround that I’ve seen was a suggestion to get around Error 606, and that was apparently to (while already connected to the internet)
    A) Begin the Uninstall Procedure
    B) Choose REPAIR once the Uninstall process begins, do NOT actually Uninstall the program.
    C) Program begins the “Repair” process, and potentially downloads updates while doing this.
    D) Cross fingers and toes
    E) Restart the program and hope for the best.

Thought the description about the activation code was a little funny (see picture).
” You will be prompted to enter it during installation, perhaps more than once. ”
PERHAPS? Then again, several users have posted having to enter their activation code multiple times, so technically that’s a normal thing – ‘perhaps more than once”.

Also read on the support forums that a “windows update” might potentially correct the problem, but the support person didn’t list the specific update or KB article for the update that was needed. Perhaps it might be Dot Net related, but that’s just a guess.

In the past, have always tried to buy the CD as it allegedly shipped with a “compatibility utility” (TurboTaxUtility.xxx) that might potentially help out when there were issues. Going with the download method means missing out on that program, unless one can locate it on the support site and get it manually. But with the CD, there is always a risk of the disc arriving damaged, and that thought DID cross my mind today when I picked up the envelope from the Amazon Locker and heard the tell-tale sound of the disc rattling around inside the plastic holder. With the new “activation code” method, CD purchasers can download the program directly from Intuit. One needs to create an account of course, but so long as one has their activation code, the download option is available!

    ??? Early Adopter Blues ???
Have read that if one Gets On Board Early and buys the program prior to late January, then one is basically buying an “incomplete program” as the necessary files and forms are Not Yet Available. Tried to do a bit of research on this, and seems that there **WAS** a major TT2019 update released around the last week of December-ish, and perhaps in those updates is something to correct Error 606 and other Activation Blues. Even so, also read that many of the State forms will not be available until January. Some States being later-to-the-party than others. And in some instances, certain forms will ONLY be available if one goes the Hard Copy route rather than e-filing State.

    ?? E-file State Fee ??
Also read that there is (starting in 2019?) a “fee” if one wishing to E-file one’s State return, even if it only a single State. No idea if that “fee” is multiplied if one has to file in more than one State.

    ?? Windows 7 ??
Many have said that Year 2019 *will* indeed install under Windows 7, although next year will need to have Windows 10 (Possibly Win8?). Although if one had it installed on a Standalone Machine not connected to the internet, one wouldn’t need to worry about vulnerabilities. Install program, download program updates and State, activate, disconnect from internet – worry free. In fact, if one didn’t need to activate, one could simply download the update files via a different computer and leave one’s “tax machine” offline 100% of the time. So by requiring an internet connection to activate, they are actually forcing users to connect their PCs to the internet – ironically making them Less Secure.
